Nature of Research

Primary research is when you go out to find something out first hand and learn about for a project, this means that you don't have to research this later on. It can be done through questionnaires and other types of research. For my primary research I made a questionnaire asking people about there views on the subject in hand, I also asked my friends who play guitar in person what they think. I handed out a virtual questionnaire on the internet to people I know through Facebook and Twitter, also I had to email it to some people as they weren't able to use social networking at the time.

Secondary research is when you use information that someone else has collected to help you with your project.
For example you would go on to a website and look for the information you need and then take it and use it. Which is exactly what I did for our video, I went looking on the internet for peoples views and I used them in my research post. The main reason I did this was the fact that I didn't get enough results back from my questionnaire. There was a website that I found that had lots of different peoples views on why the guitar had become such a popular instrument.

Qantitative research is when you collect data and put it into table and graphs and use that data to your advantage as you could then maybe work on a hypothesis for example ; 'for every person who says that the guitar isn't popular 5 more say it is'. Personally I didn't use this type of research but if I had I would use the results from the questionnaire to pull together a graph or table and then draw a hypothesis from that.

BARB is the official viewing figures in the UK, they monitor who watches what when, and then uses that information to see what is most popular on TV at that time. If you view the figures then you will see when the majority of the country watches TV. They give you up to date facts and figures on whats being watched and when.

RAJAR does exactly the same thing as BARB only it concentrates on radio stations instead of TV. They say on there website the same things as BARB do but instead they give the viewing figures of radios, and again, they give facts and figures on what's popular at that point in time.

When it came to working out who my audience was going to be I had to be fairly logical about it as these days only people who share the same interests as you will want to watch what you put on TV so I thought that I would aim this at young people ie my age, and the older generation as this may be something that they could do with with their spare time.

When I originally came up with the idea I thought about the audience and realised that more and more young people were picking up the guitar, so i knew that this would be my primary audience. When we worked out what kind of documentary we wanted it to be I watched a fair few music documentaries to see how they were made and it seemed that it would be fairly easy to set up and if i could get other people to bring there guitars then that wouldn't be a problem either. As for the equipment we could just hire that from college. we use the media room for our video and we blacked it out and used the lights in there to give different effects to the room and we filmed there.

I made a questionnaire which i sent out to people i knew and hoped that they would fill it in for me and send me back a filled out version. I had a few issues with when the were sent back some of them didn't have any results on them but apart from that there weren't any problems, I only sent this to people I trust so I didn't encounter any immaturity so there weren't problems there either. I sent this questionnaire to 15 people and i got 13 replies.

The people in our documentary and those who helped were definitely interested in the subject as they had all been playing the guitar for at least a year and took it very seriously which helped in the production of it as we just got on with it and finished within plenty of time.

  1. This is good and easily a pass Andrew. To get a merit it needs to be a little more comprehensive (eg where is qualitative research? Where is market research?) and it also needs more examples drawn from real media practice. Some links and illustrations would show that you can make better use of the medium of the blog, too.
